Lovers of art and luxury getaways listen up – a new Art Series hotel is set to open in Melbourne in November.
The Chen is the eighth jewel in the boutique hotel group’s crown, and finds its home – not in the city or the leafy inner-south – but in the north-eastern suburb of Box Hill.
Fitting then, that its namesake, three-time Archibald Prize finalist Zhong Chen, has lived in Box Hill for the past decade.
Zhong’s art celebrates cultural diversity, and is influenced by memories of his childhood in China and traditional Chinese art, along with Chinese pop-culture.
Neon hues, abstract composition and a sense of whimsy made Zhong’s work the perfect starting point for the hotel’s architects Peddle Thorp.
His Kung Fu series, featuring traditional fighters haphazardly splashed with bright paints, will be the main influence through the hotel’s common spaces and in its 100 guest rooms. Bold colours will wind through the five floors, creating vibrant, yet relaxing atmosphere.
Box Hill is known for its top yum cha establishments, with Melburnians flocking to the ‘burbs to try the traditional fare.
Guests at The Chen can venture out, or experience what is being touted as Melbourne’s best yum cha at one of the hotel’s four dining destinations.
A stunningly landscaped rooftop pool will be the cherry on top of the designer accommodation, boasting stellar views across the city.
The hotel will be housed in the much anticipated Whitehorse Towers development, which, along with The Chen, will include 511 luxury apartments, a gym, parking and an events centre.
