Personal space: at home with AFL player Jack Watts

The AFL got off to a flying start for Demons utility player Jack Watts with a convincing first-round win against the Saints. But now he’s really playing in rival territory, having moved into an original two-storey Victorian terrace house right in St Kilda’s heartland.

“It is your typical share house. It’s a young environment and we love to have fun. There’s music playing all the time and not too much that’s breakable,” says Jack, who shares the new digs with his cousin and best mate Mitch and two other friends. “It took forever to find because Mitch and I both have dogs.”

The decor, unsurprisingly, leans heavily to the sporting, with a table tennis table and a big picture of Jack’s sporting hero, basketballer Michael Jordan, dominating the downstairs living area.

But Jack – who is co-founder of the swimwear company SKWOSH – also has a creative side. He recently took delivery of a piano, which he’s very excited about.

“I was very inspired by La La Land,” the 26-year-old says, laughing. “I love music and am about to start lessons.”

SWIMWEAR

My business partner Adam Walsh set up SKWOSH about a year and a half ago.
We saw a gap in the market for men’s swimwear that actually looks nice and that you feel good wearing.

CLOCK

I have an interest in one-off pieces. This Hey Stubby artist series clock was done by Jack Turner, who designs our SKWOSH shorts. I found it up on the website Hunting For George and he actually didn’t know I had bought this.

TABLE TENNIS TABLE

I’ve won three MFC table tennis tournaments in a row, so I’m on top of my game at the moment. It is another thing from childhood, I guess. I used to play my dad and he used to smash me, but once I got into my teens I started getting him.

ROGER FEDERER NIKE CLOTHING

I asked my manager if it was at all possible to get a Roger Federer outfit for the table tennis tournament. She asked the people at Nike and they sent it over from America. You can’t buy it in the store because it is made specifically for him. The boys loved it – it was a bit of a show.

GOLF CLUBS

My dad tried to get me into golf when I was a kid, but I didn’t have the patience. Now I am obsessed. All the boys at MFC (Melbourne Football Club) play a lot of golf in their time off. I play off at 10.4 at the moment.

PAINTING

I saw this painting of Michael Jordan when I was on holiday in Bali. He is just the greatest of all time.
Growing up I was a big basketball nerd. I watched all his videos, all his games, and just loved him.

DOG

I have had Jett for 4½ years. He’s a typical Labrador and will eat anything. He’s not much of a training companion, being only good for the first couple of laps, but he is a best mate, good friend and good to have around the house.

WATCHES

I have a fascination with clocks and watches. My dad had one specific watch all the way through my childhood. I have maybe 20 of them. I don’t go for a particular brand. I like a simple minimalistic look, but it is good to have options.
