If you want a sanctuary far from the maddening crowd, consider cocooning yourself in a room with dark walls. They are a haven, according to Haymes colour consultant Wendy Rennie.

She says a dark wall “is a future-forward palette that positions the interiors in our home where we want to feel safe and secure”.

Here are her tips on working with dark walls:

LIGHT

Consider the type of light available in the space. Is there a natural or artificial source? Or is it a mix of both? Use natural light to create contrast and depth; artificial to suggest a soft, dreamlike space.

BLACKOUT

In a bedroom, a complete blackout approach with low contrast will promote rest and a perfect space for sleeping.

PERIOD HOUSES

Using dark colours on the walls of living rooms and picking out the trims and features in lighter colours can work effectively in period houses.

Often, this contrast can enhance the shape or style of the room and its proportions. Rooms with higher ceilings can take dark colours really well.

FURNITURE

Furniture and accessories can always be used to add contrast, texture and light to a room with dark walls.

DRAMA

Don’t be scared to commit to a dark colour as a treatment for the whole room. This works well to add atmosphere and create a dramatic effect.
