BE IMPECCABLE

Briony Croft (brionycroft.com.au) helps high-flying businesswomen negotiate success’ subtle sartorial rules

DO

  • Be modern, immaculately detailed – with neatly styled hair, well-judged make-up, excellent manicure, thoughtful watch, glint of jewellery, perfect handbag and heels.
  • Be properly fitted for flattering, versatile (multi-use) tailored skirts, trousers and jackets in crease-resistant, classic-coloured fabrics.
  • Be modest; hemlines should not be too short (no more than two centimetres above the knee), necklines not too low.
  • Sheer hosiery is preferable to bare legs, black hosiery (including opaques) is suitable only in an ensemble that includes black.

DON’T

  • Flamboyant and overtly sexy clothes and jewellery dilute your aura of authority; tone it down.
  • Excessive make-up is distracting; one session with a professional make-up artist is a lifetime investment.
  • Some fabrics exacerbate body odour; pick pure yarns, especially for tops to be worn close to skin.
  • Hobbling in heels is not attractive; tuck emergency flats into your handbag, or pick a mid-heel or
    flattering flat.

BE CLEVER, BE CAREFUL

Executive stylist Sally McKinnon (styledbysally.com.au) says rules about men’s workwear have relaxed, but they’re still there.

DO

  • Slow down, groom carefully; consider every centimetre from hair to shoes.
  • Modernise regularly to sharp-cut, well-tailored jackets and trousers fitted to flatter your build.
  • Pick a plain navy suit for easiest styling – white button-down shirt, mid-tone tie, all-brown shoes, belt, bag.
  • Add good-quality accessories to assert pings of your personality – socks, spectacles, cufflinks, watch, scarf, coat.

DON’T

  • Pick just any old suit; ill-fitting, old-fashioned workwear implies your work will be, too.
  • A grungy old gym-bag or backpack can blunt the sharpest look; invest in a classic and keep it nice.
  • Careless grooming is a deal-breaker; be clean, smell good, wipe shoes shiny, visit an excellent barber frequently.
  • Raunchy ties and Bart Simpson socks. Just don’t.
