Inside Elyse and Josh’s house for The Block

Soon after filming wrapped on Channel Nine’s prime-time slayer The Block, an official photographer paced the back yard of Josh and Elyse, seeking something more.

Josh called Elyse, who was out shopping. “Honey,” he said, “we need bubbles.” In days gone by, Elyse might have rushed back with champagne corks popping. Instead, she tapped an app on her smartphone. Josh smiled as his plunge pool turned into a spa, frothing like the finest Dom Perignon.

After the storm, the calm. Josh and Elyse, arguably The Block’s hardest-working team, have created beauty that is as magical as it is practical, with brilliant ideas that might be copied across Australia.

To recap: The weatherboard house was built in Brighton by Mark and Hiltje Seach, who ran a dairy farm. Snapped up for The Block, it was trucked to the former site of a retirement home to become the focus of national envy and debate.

Renamed The Regent, it has three parts: The two-storey house, the garden and pool, and the rear building, which has two garages and a studio apartment. Spotted gum floorboards, marble and stone finishes, beaded light fittings and remote-controlled Velux skylights combine to make this property a winner for decades hence.

The house has a carpeted study and three double bedrooms off the central hall. The main has a walk-in wardrobe with full-length mirror and an en suite with shower and circular, freestanding tub. Another bedroom has a mezzanine study.

Stroll down the louvred breezeway to the open-plan living and dining area, a beautiful space with full-length glazing, a glass fireplace and two trifold doors to the garden. The marble kitchen has a butler’s pantry, an island bench and Bosch appliances, including a coffee machine.

The garden, designed by Dave Franklin, has a deck, lawn, glass-fenced pool, cubby and Beefeater barbecue. The two-storey outbuilding has a double and a single garage, storeroom and first-floor apartment with living room, bedroom and bathroom.

The main house’s first floor contains the main bedroom, which has a walk-in wardrobe and fully-tiled en suite with shower and tub. The Regent comes with three Bluetooth-enabled televisions, wireless security and furniture.
