Kate Hore says she couldn’t wipe the smile off her face when she found out she had been selected for the Melbourne Demon’s AFL Women’s team rookie list for 2018.

The ex-Mentone Grammar student, who graduated in 2012, found out she had been selected earlier this month (May).

“I was absolutely thrilled when I found out I would be joining the Melbourne Football club – the smile could not be wiped off my face,” she says.

Kate had been playing with VFL Women’s side St Kilda Sharks only coming back to AFL recently after playing basketball for many years with the Sandringham Sabres in the SEABL.

She decided to have another go at AFL footy after having to give up competitive play as a 12-year-old.  Kate says she started out playing Auskick as a young girl, having to give up football as a 12-year-old when the competition became boys only.

When she heard about the AFLW she wanted the chance to play again.

“Although I didn’t have the opportunity to continue playing, football has always been a big part of my life, and I just knew that it was something I really wanted to have a go at,” she says.

At Mentone Grammar, Kate was always a sporty student, enjoying lots of different team activities throughout the year.

“At school I tried a bit of everything, including softball, tennis and volleyball in the summer months, and soccer and basketball in the winter months. Basketball was my main sport throughout my schooling years,” Kate says.

It’s given her the type of skills to be an allrounder – playing on the wing and in the forward on field.

Kate’s sporting inspiration is professional basketball player and Adelaide Crows AFLW star, Erin Phillips.

“She is an unbelievable athlete and what she has been able to accomplish both in basketball, and now football, is just amazing.”

Next year, no doubt, she will have the opportunity to play against Erin in the second ever AFLW season.
