The Cornish Arms can’t stop the mock

The Cornish Arms in Brunswick is perhaps best known for its menu of vegan pub food. Mock chicken, mock prawn, mock cheese, the whole nine mock yards. But the pub has added another non-mock string to its bow, dipping its toes into the world of quality, thirst-quenching cocktails at its jaunty new rooftop bar.

Designed by Wendy Bergman (Angus & Bon), the Cornish Arms rooftop is a practical, stylish mix of timber decking, striped canvas umbrellas and deck chairs, custom-built tables, weatherproofing via awnings and heating and a brilliant main bar clad in lichen-covered roof tiles.

The cocktails are worth the double-storey climb. They’re skilfully constructed with a bias towards Australian distillers and minimal garnishing.

The cocktail menu, displayed on pegboards at the bar, is short, sharp and something of a moveable feast, with cocktails changing to suit the season.

The bar has its own small kitchen down one end and the menu (pegboard again) is all about tipple-friendly food not shy of salt and fat.

Those after a vegan fix may have to head downstairs or plead for a mock souvlaki to be sent up.

Good cocktails and unbeatable views are a hard combination to beat, particularly in flat, vista-starved Brunswick. Time for some local spirit and fresh perspective.
