Sophistication and precision define this recently completed modernist house on an elevated site overlooking Como Park in South Yarra.
Every window frames a carefully considered outlook, capturing longer parkland views and focusing on landscaped features.
Multi-award-winning Stonehaven Homes designed and built the 680-square-metre residence to an exacting brief, working closely with clients who, having enjoyed their first Stonehaven home, were keen to repeat their experience in a second new build.
Stonehaven architect Roman Franetic says the design provides vistas as well as privacy for all living areas and bedrooms.
“Our clients wanted a modernist design – a house where the detail in every aspect and each vista was precise – there had to be something happening wherever you turned.
“There are meticulous shadow lines and recessed pelmets so deep that curtains or blinds appear to continue upward. The design shows that modernist style doesn’t need to be cold and formal – here it’s about precision and detail,” Roman says.
The basement level includes a four-car garage, a gym or music room that opens to a subterranean courtyard with stairs to ground level, a wine cellar, bathroom and two 10,000-litre water tanks.
A central lift whisks residents to the ground level, where a clever interplay of glass and solid walls devises an elegant series of living and working spaces. Designed in two parts with private and social working spaces, the kitchen’s social end opens to dining and living with terraces beyond.
Offset from the rectangular dining and living area is a large library that shares views on to a reflection pond with the living area. Terraces at the house’s front and rear create entertainment spaces for different times of the day.
Upstairs, the main suite has a balcony and park views and a capacious naturally-lit dressing room that opens via a secret door to an en suite bathroom. A large sitting room, second bedroom and two bathrooms complete the top level.
An advanced automation system remotely controls every aspect of the house’s operation and there’s a large secure electronic locker at the front gate for deliveries.
“A lot of the house’s features are invisible – this is sophisticated modern architecture where everything is integrated to create an intelligent and incredibly liveable home,” Roman says.
