The Weekly Review

This is Australia

It’s the lifestyle of Australia that is the envy of the rest of the world. It may no longer be all that dinky-di having adapted and adopted bits and pieces from all the cultures that have gone into the melting pot to make us what we are today.

Former Seeker Bruce Woodley summed up what we have become in the song he co-wrote for the 1988 Bicentennial:

We are one but we are many
And from all the lands on Earth we come
We share a dream and sing with one voice:
“I am, you are, we are Australian.”

Australian fashion is young, energetic and powering ahead. It is sure to get richer by
tapping into the myriad influences of all the people who now call Australia home. Our models already reflect the diversity, they just need the opportunities.

Thank you for this wonderful and long over due cover image. Our Australia is truly a great cosmopolitan nation in the world. There are other countries that do boast of being cosmopolitan, multi-cultural and sophisticated. But they are often either feuding with each other or unwittingly creating ghettos and sub-cultures; grounds of subversive elements that often erupt into full blown violence and national security concerns. As an Australian, a nationalist, and as a Secondary School teacher, I am often baffled to see media pictures only of blondes as being synonymous with being Australian. One has to only come into our schools (both Private & Public) to see the multitude of colours and shapes amongst our children. Our Unis are also reflecting what is real out there in our country. Most of us (Aussies) are aware of social equity and fair play that underpin our culture and consequently this (culture) contributes to our peaceful co-existence and acceptance of differences. This diversity makes us strong (including gene pool) with interesting cuisine and cultures; all blending to become truly Australian. Images like your front cover has such powerful, yet subtle but deep, imprints in the subconscious of all of us. It is subtle massages that ultimately bind us and mould our national psyche. Let us become a shining beacon for all nations of what it means to be truly peace-loving and cosmopolitan.
