Spring rites

This spring, everywhere you look will be awash with colour, from the brightest green to the bubbliest pink to zestiest tangerine.

For a city known for its doom-and-gloom colours, this season, fashion-wise, will be colour heaven. This colour attack will not bypass the arena of hair and beauty. As celebrated make-up artist Kevyn Aucoin once said, “Colour is life.”

It is easy to claim that this is the season of colour, but transferring this trend into everyday lifestyle is another story. People are afraid of wearing colour. It could be due to the fact that mistakes are more visible and a strong colour tends to draw unwarranted attention.

This is so untrue, as anyone and everyone can and should wear colour instead of their neutrals, indigos and failsafe blacks.

The trick, if you are a colour virgin, is to start with baby steps – less is more and once you have found your feet to go to town. It is, after all, just make-up.
Liners and mascara in vivid colours or strong-hued lip glosses are the easiest to wear and pull off. In these following pages green, purple, pinks and reds take centre stage, but if black is your safety net, wear it dramatically and make a statement.

“Hair and make-up go hand in hand,” says James Furness, style master for Kevin Murphy. Furness, who is celebrating 25 years in the hair industry, predicts spring/summer looks to be heavily influenced by the 1950s.

“Smoother finished up-dos and wavy, shiny coiffed long hair will be the rage, with hair colour taking on a more ash tone in shade.”

Furness styled the hair in these pages for some added flair and frivolity, but his foundation for each look is well blow-waved, curled and softly teased hair.

Another category going berserk in the beauty field is nail polish. Overlook run-of-the-mill sleek manicures and opt for some fun: ombré nails, longer nail tips with some uncheesy nail art or just wearing some strong colours on each digit.

The question I constantly ask is, when did we become so safe and predictable? Looking back at some fashion spreads from the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s and ’80s, there was so much fun and life. We have become so regimented in our approach to beauty that we have been engineered to ridicule anything a little bit out of the ordinary.

Challenge yourself this new season and your hairstylists, manicurists and beauticians. Furness recommends you do your homework and choose a stylist who is good for you. “The right stylist will reward you,” he says.

And likewise a bit of colour other than brown is just as good as a holiday. So shed your routine and dip your fingers into a bit of glorious colour.

I've always worn colour because I'm a natural blonde (I don't wear black), and this Spring I'm going to embrace the new season people watching to see how many Melbournians can put aside their drab black outfits and wear colour

I'm going to make it dramatic, I'm excited to try some purple eyeliner while I put on my spring season outfit. There is going to be some much fun as I put on some colourful nail polish such as purple n bright green. And hey, I'm going to talk to my hair dresser about wavy curly hair, might even get some highlights done.

Spring has sprung, the grass has ris, I wonder where the birdies is....... I can't wait to don the bright colours of the season and welcome that Spring sunshine and fields of fragrant, blooming wildflowers. It's time to shed Melbourne's "fifty shades of grey"!!

To make my face, nails and clothing a portrait of colour. Invest in the gorgeous pastel coloured nail polishes in hues of pink, mauve or sage green to celebrate the blossoms of spring, trading safe black outfits with ones of colour for a touch of brightness and optimism and putting eye colour shadow on eyelids for sparkling eyes

I enjoy wearing colour so not much will change with my clothing style, but my make-up has been mainly neutral. I've just started wearing red lipstick which I've never done before and look forward to experimenting with coloured eyeliners.

Away with the heavy, dark eyeliner that speaks for my winter-blues. I start splattering myself with fruity perfumes, embrace bright clothes and dying my hair new brilliant shades. I'm also starting Yoga in the sun; and if that doesn't do something for beauty, what will?

I will be embracing the new season with a Spring clean of me! Do a detox, then head to toe makeover - deep exfoliation, body brushing, facial, hair removal, blonde highlights and of course, spring pastels on my nails.

I love the green eyeshadow and am going to try some myself. I also want to ditch the bronzer in favour of a nice pink blusher - should go with all the floral prints out this Spring.

I am looking forward to blowing the doom and gloom of winter away and embracing the bright green, pink and tangerine of the spring wear clothing. I have enjoyed the tips on hair and make up from James Furness and Kevin Murphy. I was lucky enough to attend a spring fashion show at the Melbourne Town Hall last night and am looking forward to this seasons' beautiful colours.
Posted by Pitsa at 5.06PM  5-9-2012
Spring is my most favourite season! Time to push those darker clothes and makeup colours aside and mimmick the fresh colours Spring spoils us with! I adore crisp white shirts and pants accentuating them with colourful accessories: nail colour, eye shadows, bangles and scarves. it's a perfect time for an all over body 'Spring clean'
Posted by rach at 3.44PM  5-9-2012

Im going to be experimenting with all eyeshadow colours that remind me of flowers in spring. Its exciting that there is so much colour in fashion as well so it makes it inspiring to experiment with colour in makeup as well. I already use different colours and designs when I do my own nail art. I really look forward to winning a beauty hamper full of spring gems!!!
Posted by Tracey at 12.14PM  5-9-2012
I am so excited about the bright colours emerging for Spring! I am going to take the plunge and add a splash of colour, whether it eyes, nails, accessories or clothes - everyday!
Posted by KC at 11.12AM  5-9-2012
Oof, the colors, the hair, the floral hair piece! Love it all. This season, I'll be going with light greens and dark blues. As it is, I'm mad about eye makeup and never leave the house without eyeliner + kohl. So yeah, blues & greens for clothing and eyes. For lips I generally stick to coral shades, to be on the safe side. And as for nail art, ombré nails sound perfect for moi!

New season, new routines. There's waxing to be done, highlights to re-do, make-up colours to update and moisturise more than ever.
Posted by Laura C at 2.08PM  4-9-2012
I will be going for lots of vivid eye colours (purple shades mostly) and rosy cheeks. Nothing like it to remind us the dreariness of winter is over!

By having a 'spring fling' with adventurous colours!
Posted by Jennifer at 11.29AM  4-9-2012
Beauty wise I will drink lots of water to keep my skin clear, remember to apply sunscreen everyday and go shopping for new spring eyeshadow colours to match my look.
Posted by Michelle Boag at 9.55AM  4-9-2012
Last year I played it safe and simply added a few bright nail polishes and scarves. But this year I have thrown caution to the wind and have introduced colour in everything I have purchased. Coloured jeans are my most favourite addition! Bring on the warm sunny days, I'm ready to brighten things up.
Posted by natasha m at 7.26AM  4-9-2012
I really love the look created on the photo art master of TOSHIHIO TAKAOKA . Do you know that in Russia and in most Slavic countries the beauty of a woman was and still is defined by the beauty of her eyebrowse? IMHO eyes are the most distinctive part of anyone's beauty as they always reflect the beauty of your soul. As to embracing the new season beauty-wise, I will definitely follow my heart... I will use tender and light perfumes something like Valentina by Valentino...
Posted by pam perri at 12.01AM  4-9-2012
