What better way to spend the March long weekend than in the garden? This new event from the team behind A Day on the Green takes over Melbourne’s best-loved garden for three days of music, food and fine wine.

Event director Michael Newton says his team was thrilled when Royal Botanic Gardens staff suggested a collaboration.

“We’re always getting approached by venues that aren’t wineries and we always say no, but this time we couldn’t,” he says. “We’ve created a whole new event around the gardens.”

Choosing the line-up wasn’t easy, knowing the acts had to be as good as the setting.

When it comes to Aussie icons, it’s hard to go past John Farnham. Alongside fellow Melbourne boys Daryl Braithwaite and Ross Wilson, Whispering Jack (or The Voice or Farnesy, take your pick) will kick things off on Friday with a triptych of classic ’80s rock. Closing night has an equally retro feel, with star turns from Icehouse and James Reyne.

I ask Michael if this is a nod towards the weekend attracting punters who might have outgrown the dust, crowds and general discomfort usually associated with music festivals. It seems so. “The capacity at the gardens is quite small, it’s only 4000, so you’ll get a really intimate show,” Michael says.

“It’s about being comfortable, about being in a nice environment.”

Which isn’t to say the event is solely for an older crowd. Tickets for Saturday night, which features newer acts Boy & Bear, San Cisco and Amy Shark (going great guns on Triple J), have been selling fast.

This is proudly a premium affair, where the food is as important as the music. The Eatery, adjoining the main site, will provide all manner of treats from top vendors including Ladro, Burn City Smokers, The Royale Brothers and Pommery Champagne & Oyster Bar. A VIP canapes package is also available.

“People can buy a VIP ticket and have three hours of fantastic food in Jardin Tan and then go out and enjoy a show with a reserved seat. We’ve also got a native cocktail bar serving cocktails infused with native plants.”
