EVAS Media Awards \ July 26
06/08/2012
Representatives from more than 110 organisations and groups came together to support The Eliminating Violence Against Women Media Awards, or The EVAs, on July 26 at the ANZ Pavilion in the Arts Centre. The night, an initiative of Domestic Violence Victoria, No To Violence and CASA Forum, awards journalists from all mediums for excellence in the reporting of violence against women. Clem Bastow’s review of pop singer Brian McFadden’s “Just The Way You Are” claimed the Gold EVA, with judges commenting that the “controversial music review reaches in and rips the heart out of the social myths and behaviours that tolerate, excuse, minimise and romanticise violence against women.”

Metro Gallery art award \ July 16-28
16/07/2012
The top prize at the annual Metro Gallery Art Award for emerging artists went to Melbourne artist Natasha Bieniek for her 10cm by 15cm oil painting, Keepsake. Award chairman and former Victorian Premier Jeff Kennett presented Bieniek with the $50,000 prize on behalf of a judging panel that included Archibald Prize winner Ben Quilty and the 2011 Metro winner, Vincent Fantauzzo. A graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts and a two-time finalist in the Archibald Prize, Bieneik says her miniature portraits are an attempt to “engage with the audience on a more intimate level”. “In contemporary culture so much of the imagery we see is miniaturised, through iPhones and tablets,” she says. “I felt it was time to bring this ancient art into a modern context.” The Metro award, Australia’s richest for emerging artists, is now in its 10th year. The gallery will display the 25 finalists’ work until July 28. www.metrogallery.com.au The 25 finalists for the 2012 Metro Gallery Art Award can be viewed at » metrogallery.com.au/exhibitions/exhibition/60
