Geelong revival fashions on the field
07/12/2012
Fashion took a step back in time at the first Geelong Revival Fashions on the Field, with girls young and old dressing to match the era of the classic cars racing along the waterfront. Eye-catching hats and enough spots to hide a coalition of cheetahs were the order of the day as a large crowd watched 30 contestants vying for titles such as “Fifties Filly” and “Vampy Vixen”. Kimberley Riddett from Geelong stole the show with a classic three-piece ensemble, complete with 1950s hat. The local Mill Market and op shops proved popular places for many contestants in finding that special outfit for the competition. Sandy Warren, from Portarlington, arrived dressed to the nines in a ’60s-style hot-pink mini. “I prefer older style clothes with lots of bling,” she said. “Bring bling back, I say!” Winner Megan Saxon wore a homemade ’50s-style dress complemented by driving gloves. “It’s fabulous to win something like this,” she said. “The outfits were so good.” Judge Sharon Burgess was very impressed by the outfits on display. “The ladies went to so much effort to create their look. We had a much bigger turnout than we expected,” she said. Organiser Chris Heath said the event had a great future as a part of the Geelong Revival motorsport weekend. “Next year we want this to be a much bigger part of the day,” she said. “Our Fashions on the Field was inspired by a similar event at Goodwood in England. Thousands of people turn out there in period clothes. We even hope to attract men to our event next year.”

Australian Launch of Toms \ October 25
05/11/2012
Melburnians gathered on the deck of Chapel Street haunt Speakeasy on October 25 to celebrate the Australian launch of TOMS, the hip footwear and eyewear movement with a cool offering. Founded by Blake Mycoskie on a simple premise, One for One, every TOMS purchase sees TOMS provide a new pair of shoes to a child in need. The brand has a similar philosophy for it’s new eyewear range. With the front section of the restaurant closed, guests entered via the back laneway, writing on the painted brick wall a one-word answer to a TOMS-inspired question – “What would you give?” Renowned street artists Maricor and Maricar worked busily on an impressive live art installation that wowed guests, who enjoyed upbeat tunes from Speakeasy’s resident DJ and sipping on bespoke blue Curacao TOMStini cocktails. TOMS will be popping up in Melbourne shops, including Hype DC, Patagonia and Glue.
