Montalto Exhibition
25/03/2013
The rolling hills of Montalto Vineyard & Olive Grove on the Mornington Peninsula will again play host to more than 40 contemporary outdoor sculptures this autumn. Owners John and Wendy Mitchell welcome the temporary works to their permanent collection of art, which features past winners of the Montalto Sculpture Prize installed throughout their vast property. Melbourne artist Fredrick White was announced the 2013 winner of the prestigious award at the opening of the exhibition on February 17. His piece, Abundance, uses aluminium to reflect mankind’s connection to the earth, creating a visual experience of balance, tension and movement. White’s work will be on display alongside that of the 23 other finalists dotted around this natural amphitheatre until April 28, before it becomes part of the permanent collection.

PAKO FESTA \ FEBRUARY 23
28/02/2013
Pakington Street was transformed into a multicultural wonderland for one extravagant, explosive day to celebrate cultural diversity. This year’s Pako Festa, the 31st, was bigger and better than ever. Tens of thousands of revellers descended on the festival to watch performers from 34 ethnic communities flip, shimmy and shake their way down the main drag in the much-anticipated Pako Parade. Attendees were treated to an incredible smorgasbord of international cuisines, with vendors representing more than a dozen nationalities lining the street with tempting treats. If decibel readings were anything to go by, My Kitchen Rules contestants Sam and Chris and Home and Away stars Lisa Gormley and Catherine Mack were clear crowd favourites. TWR’s Wilbur was dog-tired at work on Monday after being swept up in the festivities.

Jeep International Polo competition \ FEBRUARY 23
28/02/2013
Is polo the new horse racing? Novice polo player Shantelle Saiville from Geelong seems to think so. On Saturday she joined more than 1000 spectators at the Jeep February International Polo competition to watch local and international players compete on the manicured polo field at Werribee Park Mansion. “It’s a fantastic day with great weather and a beautiful crowd,” she said. “I think polo is the new races. It’s stylish, really authentic and it’s a great opportunity to meet people.” While the marquees were filled with fillies dressed as if they were spending a day at the races, sipping Champagne and eating canapés, the real action was on the field. The annual Jeep International is one of the hallmark events on the Victorian Polo Club calendar with the highlight match of the one-day tournament featuring Victoria’s top players taking on England.

Band4Hope Australian Launch, No Vacancy Gallery, QV Melbourne.
28/02/2013
With the mantra ‘Hope is contagious... [pass it on]’ Band4Hope founders Lucie Galt, Lachlan, Hamish and Miriam McWilliam launched their not-for-profit social enterprise, "Hope is Contagious... [pass it on]" exhibition, at the No Vacancy Gallery, QV Melbourne on February 13. The exhibition features live projected digital illustration by Band4Hope co-founder Hamish McWilliam, interactive installations and original artwork with paintings, photography, limited-edition prints and illustrations by Melbourne artists, including co-founder Miriam McWilliam, responding to the theme of hope. A key feature of the exhibition is a Tree4Hope installation, made from more than 13,000 hope tags collected at British music festivals. Guests visiting the exhibition can add their hope to the growing tree and there will be an Inspirations4Hope installation, featuring 1000 Insta-Hope photographs. The Band4Hope project promotes hope and altruism, as well as ethical trade, through the passing on of copper and zinc wristbands. The concept is fun, interactive and simple. Purchase a beautiful Band4Hope band online, enjoy it for a month and feel empowered to make a difference then pass it on, allowing the chain of hope to continue. Band4Hope wristbands can be purchased online. The "Hope is Contagious... [pass it on]" exhibition, runs until March 3 at the No Vacancy Gallery, 34-40 Jane Bell Lane, QV Melbourne (enter from Russell St).
