The Weekly Review

This is my kind of false spring. The wisteria is in budburst; the silver birch is not only laden with seed pods but the leaves are already unfurling; the Boston ivy has come to life; and even the great elms in Carlton Gardens are in leaf.

At a time when AFL teams are almost absurdly top-heavy with management, bureaucracy, team trainers, support staff and administration, it seems ridiculous to pile the expectation of a win on just one set of shoulders.

It’s a strange business, TV.

I was reminded of the unfair assumptions made about certain social groups when I read last week that Virgin Australia had courted controversy with its policy of preventing male passengers from sitting next to unaccompanied children.

The light was red. Bright, blooming, dangerous red, and the flock of unsuspecting pedestrians had trustingly started to cross the city intersection as the green man popped up in front of them.
