It might not be all over for Arnie. OK, Maria Shriver won’t be taking his calls for a while (those communications will now be conducted via a highly paid divorce lawyer) but some Republican figures, political strategists and former advisers are cool and unblinking in their assessment of the future political fortunes of former Californian “Governator”, Arnold Schwarzenegger: he’s not necessarily finished yet.

The average Joe was slumped at the end of the bar, and he was on for a chat. The senior government adviser wasn’t, but this affable bloke wasn’t taking no for an answer.

I have the most endearing wedding invitation sitting on my desk. As befits the young journalist whose marriage this will be, the card tells the sweet – and admirably succinct – story of the two lovers in beautifully rhythmic blank verse.

My friend’s eyes widened like an owl watching a horror movie: “Everything’s just awful, isn’t it? I mean, it’s all just gone to hell!”. It hasn’t, of course. But I know what she means.

It must be every powerful woman’s dream: to be played in a television bio-pic by the sublime Asher Keddie.
