Colonel Tan’s

229 Chapel Street, Prahran. 9521 5985

THE VIBE \ The brainchild of culinary genius Karen Batson (head chef at The Toff in Town and Cookie), Colonel Tan’s modern take on Thai food is arguably unsurpassed in Melbourne.

THE DÉCOR \ Inhabiting a cavernous concrete space (known as Revolver to night owls), Colonel Tan’s warms it up with a retro lounge room vibe. The dining area has full table service, or you can grab a well-worn couch and order at the bar.

THE CROWD \ Be prepared for things to get a little raucous.

THE FOOD \ For vegetarians, the pad thai egg net, tomato and greens ($15.50) is a winner. Meat eaters can try the delicious fat duck noodles or one of the curries.

THE DRINK \ Groups should consider sharing a generously sized cocktail jug like the Moscow Mule ($36) or Pimm’s ($30).

THE VERDICT \ If you’re lucky enough to call 3181 home, you can enjoy a half-price entree and mains at locals’ night every Thursday. They also do a killer Tuesday trivia.
