You can fight it, but no one has ever won. However, you can win the battle against the worst that the ageing process throws your way. Don’t give in to time; it’s the same as giving up. The way to go is to approach the inevitable gracefully.

You catch a glimpse of yourself in a mirror but somebody else is looking back, somebody who bears a striking resemblance to one of your older relatives. How did this happen?

I have always been enthralled by the last scene in Sunset Boulevard, when fading screen siren Norma Desmond looks straight at the camera and calmly says, “All right Mr DeMille, I’m ready for my close-up.” As the camera inches closer, we see Norma in all her glowing glory.

Winston Churchill intoned “there is nothing wrong with change, if it is in the right direction”.
